Last year I did a post about Eataly and mentioned the brewery – La Birreria – that is housed on the rooftop. As the weather has marooned winter and moved into Spring we managed to venture up to the brewery the other week and check out what the long weekend queues are all about (we went mid-week to avoid the tourist crush).
I was thoroughly impressed with the place; we got a seat at the bar after a little wait and shared a carafe of the Summer Ale I also tried the ‘Buff’ which was infused with Thyme, Rosemary & Parsley…it sounds grim but the taste was summer in a glass:
The magic of the establishment, and something that will make me come back, is you can actually get a decent cask ale which is extremely rare in NYC (the only other place I’ve found cask ales was at The Spotted Pig). The beers are brewed on the roof so there is a bevvy of brewing equipment strewn around and the bar staff are extremely knowledgeable on the beers along with the science behind them – how to pour, what temperature, what glass etc.
It’s not really something I would call a hidden gem of New York but it’s a place that isn’t in all the tourist guides therefore I highly recommend it, especially if the sun is shining and you want to elevate yourself from the hustle and bustle of the Flatiron District.
